Physical Education

All children take part in Physical Education during class time. As well as this our Sport Department offer tuition in a variety of sports such as Gaelic, Hurling, Camogie, Swimming and Netball. The teams from school enter competitions where children can display their skills. The very talented children make it to the Northern Ireland School teams.

Gaelic Football

Children in St. Joseph’s can develop their Gaelic football skills with help from qualified coach Tomas, and teacher Miss Graham. Miss Graham takes an after school Gaelic club on a Thursday. A coach called Mags also teaches our P3 and P4 classes Fundamental Gaelic Skills on a Tuesday morning.
The school also has a team, which competes in the Cumann na Bunscoil league each year and also in the annual Lisburn Schools’ Championship. Tomas comes in to coach the Gaelic team on a Friday afternoon. The Gaelic football provides much excitement, enjoyment and a high level of success for the children, with a number of pupils being selected to represent Belfast in an annual fixture with Dublin schools. The high level of current success seems certain to continue as the children’s skills develop from year to year.

Netball

We have a netball coach called Stella Drayne who comes into our school on a weekly basis. She is very committed to us and she always helps and guides us. When we are playing matches she supports and guides us all the way. She teaches us the rules of the game and helps us focus and improve our skills. Mrs McCambridge helps Stella train the team and organise matches.

Gaelic Games

Mrs Gartland runs this club in the school. Children have the opportunity to develop their hand-eye co-ordination skills through participating in handball skills and hurling/camogie. Off course you also get fit along the way!!. Equipment for handball and camogie/hurling is provided and there is also the opportunity to play against different school teams. Handball is the National Sport of Ireland, and is also played by fighter pilots to improve their reactions. And remember, all the skills learned in handball and camogie are also used in many different sports!!

Swimming

We aim to teach all pupils to swim before leaving St. Joseph's.
All pupils in P5, P6 and P7 attend weekly lessons in the Leisureplex. They are instructed and guided by swimming instructors and complete badges and life saving awards.
