Music
Here in St. Joseph’s we focus very strongly on music as a way to develop children’s skills and bring fun into learning across the Curriculum.
Music is taking place in all classes. Our Music scheme whisch has now been in action for two years was designed by the Music Co-ordinator along with each year group in the school. In this scheme each strand in music is catered for. All children are given the chance to perform, compose and listen and respond to music.
Within this scheme all children from Primary Five to Primary Seven are given the opportunity to play the recorder. During this time teachers share their skills and some other teachers help classes with recorder. Our Primary Four children learn the Tin Whistle with Miss Smyth.
Those children with special talents in this area are then chosen to play a stringed instrument or join our school choir where the voice is trained. We have two choirs in St Joseph's. Miss Clarke is in charge of the P4-5 choir and Mrs O'Hare and Miss Hanna are in charge of the P6-7 choir. The choir enter many Choral competitions and a number of our pupils are completing grades in voice when they leave St. Joseph's.
The SEELB provide us with two stringed tutors – one teaching violin / viola and one teaching the flute and clarinet. These children are extremely gifted and all enter graded exams at the end of each school year.
Irish Traditional music is also catered for in St. Joseph's as a independent tutor comes in to teach tinwhistle and bodhran on a Monday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm. On a Monday between 3pm and 4pm the folk group consisting of tin whistles, bodhrans and fiddles learn to play irish Traditional Music together. Last year the Folk Group were very succesful, winning many of the competitions that they entered.
